For Dr. Usvyat, this moment holds profound personal significance, as he steps into a pivotal leadership role that will build upon the remarkable foundation established by his doctoral program advisor and mentor, Dr. Kotanko.
Dr. Usvyat shares a deep and longstanding connection with both RRI and Dr. Kotanko. As a doctoral candidate, he studied under Dr. KotankoĢýs guidance and mentorship, developing a keen understanding of his advisorĢýs leadership style and vision. Dr. Usvyat joined RRI in 2002 as an analytics expert, working under former RRIĢýs inaugural Research Director, Dr. Nathan Levin. He then joined FMEĢýs Global Medical Office in 2012 as the Head of Integrated Care Analytics. Going back to RRI is a sort of return to home for Dr. Usvyat, a full-circle moment.

Dr. Usvyat emphasizes the critical role RRI holds as an individual entity in FMEĢýs overall business. His work is about finding the common ground between patient care, community, and business. To him, RRI, along with the Global Medical Office, is like the glue between FMEĢýs Care Delivery and Care Enablement business segments. RRI is connected to Care Delivery through many activities that directly support this segment, including artificial intelligence (AI) and analytical activities. RRI also supports FMEĢýs product related activities in Care Enablement. Continuing these operations is an important part of RRIĢýs future.
ĢýThe new RRI is becoming more real-world data and insights driven, meaning weĢýll be using more data collected from clinics and standard practices. And it is PeterĢýs impactful work that allows us to take this direction. I want to keep moving forward with what he started,Ģý says Dr. Usvyat. ĢýFor example, the existing partnerships and collaborations we have with organizations across the world is something I want to continue and strengthen. Certain initiatives like AI integration and interdisciplinary collaboration are already underway. Now, Dr. Usvyat plans to steer his team into the future by building on the work initiated within the FME framework while pushing the boundaries of innovation under RRIĢýs new independence.
Dr. Usvyat is exploring advanced analytics technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), biostatistics, and mathematical modeling. He emphasizes the importance of blending interdisciplinary expertise, bringing together the complementary skillsets of mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists into one team to unlock new possibilities in kidney care innovation. These fields do not often collaborate, but the opportunity to integrate these skillsets is a game-changer for advancing innovation in nephrology research, patient care, and the development of cutting-edge clinical tools. Additionally, thanks to the groundwork laid by Dr. Kotanko, RRI now has a formally designated operational AI team whose role is to bring AI into clinical practice to improve patient care and provider tools.
Honoring the Past and Embracing the Future
ĢýRRI is unique in that it exists in this in-between world of business and patient care. ItĢýs a liminal space I enjoy living in. My undergraduate degree was in accounting, so IĢýve always worked with data and numbers. But the data I handled in accounting didnĢýt hold much meaning for me,Ģý reflects Dr. Usvyat. ĢýWhen I joined RRI, I had the opportunity to use data to do something so much more purposeful. Going from analyzing data that had seemingly superficial meaning to now working with data that focuses on patient well-being is such a positive change for me. Behind every one of these numbers I work with is a human face. That human face of data carries a significant weight for me.Ģý
